The passenger bus with registration number GE 8136-16 rammed into an abandoned diesel articulated truck with registration number GC 7150-11.
Police report says the articulated truck was heading to Accra from Kumasi but was abandoned on the road after it developed a mechanical fault.
At about 2:30am the Intercity STC Bus with passengers from Kumasi to Accra rammed into the rear direction of the stationery articulated truck.
Driver Victor Quest, 60, and second driver, Joshua Tay, died on the spot.
The bodies have been deposited at the Suhum Government Hospital for preservation and autopsy.
Passengers including a police escort were rushed to the Kibi Government Hospital for treatment.
Accident vehicles were towed from the road to allow free flow of traffic.
Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command Sergeant Francis Gomado pointed out there is an urgent need for an established response system to get rid of broken down vehicles from the road to prevent avoidable deaths on the highways.
A plan to establish a national towing service by the National Road Safety Commission as stipulated in the Road Traffic Regulation LI 2180 to remove vehicles off the road hangs.
A public outcry caused a project to take mandatory levies from motorists before towing vehicles to be discarded.
